We have a customer from Brazil who sent us an email saying he wanted to purchase a CNC plastic cutting machine with an automatic feeding worktable. This indicates that the material he intends to cut is flexible plastic rolls, so a CNC oscillating knife plastic cutting machine with an automatic feeding system can fully meet his needs.
If you also process soft plastic rolls (such as soft PVC crystal rolls, TPU films, PE/PP flexible rolls, PTFE sealing rolls, etc.) and want to reduce manual laying and continuously cut products of different shapes, choosing a CNC oscillating knife plastic cutting machine with an automatic feeding worktable is the optimal solution.
You can refer to the following configuration for machine selection:
Worktable: Equipped with a circulating conveyor belt worktable, and fitted with 2.5–4.0 mm industrial-grade seamless high-density breathable felt belt.
Automatic feeding system: Equipped with an automatic feeding bracket, and loaded with an infrared photoelectric automatic edge position control system (EPC, correction accuracy ≤±0.5mm) and pneumatic bidirectional leveling press rollers, completely eliminating “skewed travel” and “telescoping wrinkling” of rolls.
Tool configuration: An 1800 RPM ordinary electric oscillating knife (EOT, power 80W, stroke 1.0–3.0 mm) is recommended. When cutting high-toughness rolls above 0.5 mm, ultra-fine grain tungsten carbide blades with 0.63 mm edge thickness, 30° sharp angle and Teflon anti-stick coating are selected. If cutting small multi-layers (<5cm), a 400W high-power servo oscillating knife (suitable for hard materials) or high-frequency pneumatic oscillating knife can be matched.
Vacuum adsorption system: Equipped with 7.5 kW–11 kW variable-frequency high-negative pressure side-channel fan, working adsorption negative pressure maintained at -25 kPa to -32 kPa; 6-8 independently controllable zoned adsorption zones.
Why Are Soft Plastic Rolls Better Suited to Automatic Feeding Worktables?
For roll-type soft plastics, if manual laying is used, operators need to continuously unroll the roll, adjust position, confirm the cutting area, and then start the next processing. The longer the material and the more continuous the orders, the more prone this repeated operation is to errors.
An automatic feeding worktable allows rolls to continuously enter the effective cutting area at a set distance. For large-volume orders of identical products, manual intervention can be reduced; for orders of different shapes, the software can continue reading the next set of CAD files for cutting.
What Problems Does Manual Laying Have When Continuously Processing Soft Plastic Rolls?
The biggest practical problem of manual laying is repeated positioning. Without an automatic feeding system, processing long roll plastic usually requires 2 workers to manually lift tens of kilograms of material rolls onto a simple roll stand, then manually pull the roll to lay flat on the fixed machine table. This manual laying method has three problems:
1. Dimensional scrap caused by one-way stretching: When manually dragging the roll, uneven instantaneous one-way pulling force is applied. Soft plastics (such as TPU and soft PVC) stretch by 0.5%–2% under elastic stress. Cut while adsorbed in the stretched state, and the material naturally retracts after the part is removed, resulting in finished products that are several millimeters smaller overall than CAD drawings.
2. Edge wrinkling and laying waviness: It is extremely difficult to ensure uniform tension when manually smoothing wide rolls. Local arched waviness is prone to tool interference or being hit by the tool head presser foot during cutting, causing tool collision and shutdown.
3. Increased downtime: Every time one sheet is processed, the machine needs to stop for 3–5 minutes waiting for manual waste cleaning, re-pulling and re-alignment, wasting a lot of downtime.
4. High manual difficulty for complex processes: If there are printed patterns, hole positions or structures that need to be aligned with the previous process on the material, manual positioning will further increase operation difficulty.
How Does Automatic Feeding Reduce Repeated Roll Positioning and Manual Handling?
Automatic feeding systems usually feed rolls from the storage area to the cutting area step by step according to feeding commands issued by the CNC control program.
The production process can be understood as: roll placement → automatic feeding → material enters cutting area → vacuum fixation → oscillating knife cutting → current area completed → feeding again → next set of pattern cutting.
This method is especially suitable for continuous production of products of the same or similar size:
1. Conveyor axis closed-loop linkage: The machine performs precise pulse control of the conveyor belt as an independent rotary CNC axis. When the graphics cutting of the current working area is completed, the system automatically instructs the conveyor belt to rotate forward by an accurate step distance, synchronously sends cut parts to the extended collection area at the front of the machine, and smoothly pulls the uncut roll behind to the cutting area.
2. Physical absolute coordinate alignment: The roll always remains relatively stationary with the high-damping breathable felt during conveyor operation, eliminating repeated positioning errors of manual origin finding each time, realizing true “one-button start, full-roll unmanned processing”.
How to Keep Material Flat and Reduce Skew During Continuous Roll Feeding?
The Trustercnc CNC oscillating knife plastic cutting machine maintains material flatness and prevents skew through three methods:
1. Full-width pneumatic synchronous press roller: A pair of opposed press rollers coated with polyurethane elastomers are set at the feeding inlet, providing uniform line pressure through a precision pressure regulating valve to forcibly flatten curled edges during unrolling.
2. Conveying felt micro-damping traction: The surface of the circulating conveying felt belt has a micro-fiber structure, forming a balanced static friction grip layer with the plastic bottom during conveying to eliminate slipping.
3. Infrared photoelectric correction servo drive: When the roll has a slight tendency to shift to one side during transmission, the side edge sensor responds in milliseconds, driving the correction slide to perform lateral differential fine adjustment, forcing the incoming material to always remain absolutely perpendicular to the machine X-axis.
What Soft Plastic Rolls Are Suitable for Cutting with CNC Oscillating Knife Plastic Cutting Machines?
| Plastic Roll Material | Core Material Characteristics | Application Scenarios | Oscillating Knife Process Difficulty |
| Soft PVC roll | High elongation, easy surface adhesion | Industrial soft curtains, waterproof dust curtains | Medium (focus on preventing tool body adhesive) |
| TPU film / roll | Ultra-high resilience, extremely high tear resistance | Medical inflatable bags, special protective parts | High (requires ultra-high micro-shearing line speed) |
| PE / PP flexible film | Self-lubricating surface, easy to wrinkle when squeezed | Packaging liners, insulating films | Low (focus on controlling presser foot pressure) |
| PTFE Teflon sealing roll | High rigidity, self-lubricating, wear-resistant | Corrosion-resistant flange gaskets, sealing liners | High (requires large-stroke thickened blade) |
Cutting Characteristics of Flexible Plastic Rolls Such as PVC, TPU, PE and PP
Polyvinyl chloride (soft PVC roll): Contains 30%–50% plasticizer, high surface friction coefficient and self-adhesiveness. Ordinary mechanical knife scoring has extremely high resistance, and plasticizer is prone to precipitate and coke after friction heating of the tool body. High-frequency reciprocating cutting of the oscillating knife can minimize the resistance, and smooth vertical sections can be obtained with micro-lubrication or coated blades.
Thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer (TPU roll): Has the highest tear strength and elongation at break among all thermoplastics (usually 400%–800%). A blunt blade cutting TPU is like cutting a rubber band — the material only gives way elastically instead of being cut.
Cutting TPU must rely on ultra-high hardness, micron-level sharp-edged tungsten carbide blades for high-speed instant micro-fracture cutting.Polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) flexible films: Low surface energy, light and slippery texture, low tensile strength. Processing such rolls is most vulnerable to pre-blade material extrusion. Slight lateral extrusion will form wrinkles. Must rely on micro-stroke high-frequency electric tool heads for “shallow punch fast cut”.
How Do Thickness, Hardness and Elasticity of Plastic Rolls Affect Cutting Results?
Effect of thickness: When thickness increases from 0.2 mm to 2.0 mm, the bilateral clamping friction force on the tool body increases multiple times. The greater the cutting depth, the easier the tip is to bend backward under force, resulting in chamfered incisions.
Effect of hardness (Shore A / D): Ultra-soft rolls with hardness below 70A have poor deformation resistance, denting under downward pressure, requiring extremely light tool down-force. Medium-hard rolls with hardness of 85A–98A have high shear resistance, requiring the cutting head to have sufficient impact torque.
Elastic energy storage: Rolls with high elastic modulus store large amounts of elastic energy when squeezed by the blade, releasing instantly upon cutting. If feed speed and vibration frequency are mismatched, this rebound force will cause micro intermittent waviness at the incision edge.
Why Are High-Elastic Plastic Rolls More Prone to Stretching and Dimensional Deviation?
Dynamic drag elongation: When the machine XY axis drives the blade to translate forward at a speed of 100 mm/s, there is inevitable micro contact friction between the blade side and the plastic cut wall. This horizontal component force stretches the high-elongation roll along the feeding direction.
Dimensional deviation caused by stress release: The material is locally stretched by microns ahead of the tip and then cut. When the tool passes and external force disappears, the material on both sides of the incision quickly “retracts” backward due to molecular chain elastic recovery.
If the plastic micro-region is not firmly locked to the base felt by sufficient vertical vacuum negative pressure during processing, the edges of the finished regular rectangular parts often present a “hyperbolic arc” sunken in the middle, with seriously out-of-tolerance dimensional accuracy.
Why Is CNC Oscillating Knife Plastic Cutting Machine Suitable for Continuous Cutting of Soft Plastic Rolls?
Mounted on a CNC system, the oscillating knife can directly read CAD/CAM paths, making it ideal for shaped products, small-batch multi-variety production and environments with frequent graphic changes. For CNC oscillating knife cutting machines equipped with automatic feeding systems, this means the material can move forward continuously, and the product outline in each feeding area can change according to digital files.
How Does a CNC Oscillating Knife Cut Flexible Plastic Through High-Frequency Reciprocation?
The cutting mechanism of a CNC oscillating knife is completely different from rotary milling or continuous scoring. It uses a direct-drive brushless servo motor or compressed air piston inside the tool head to drive a tool holder holding a special cemented carbide flat blade, performing ultra-high frequency up-and-down oscillation in micro to millimeter micro-strokes.
Instant shear failure: When the blade cuts into the material at a frequency of more than 12,000 times per minute, the tip applies huge instantaneous shear strain rate to the local polymer within milliseconds.
Micro-strain isolation: Plastic molecular chains simply do not have time for large-scale macroscopic yield elongation and slip deformation before brittle micro-shear fracture occurs in a very small strain zone. This mechanical process of breaking macroscopic resistance into massive discrete micro-strokes reduces the horizontal lateral extrusion force on the material by more than 70% during the entire process, ensuring stress-free separation of soft plastic in place.
How Does Cold Cutting Reduce Burning and Thermal Deformation of Plastic Rolls Compared to Thermal Cutting?
Thermal cutting (such as CO₂ laser machines) cuts plastic by vaporization through focusing high-energy photon beams on the material surface, generating ultra-high temperatures of 800°C–1200°C instantly. But this is not suitable for many flexible plastic rolls:
Thermosetting and thermal decomposition characteristics: Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) begins to dehydrochlorinate (HCl) at 150°C. Not only are the cut edges severely charred and hardened, losing flexible sealing function, but corrosive gas will also damage machine guides and endanger the respiratory health of workshop workers.
Melt edge bead formation: PE, PP or TPU melt when heated. Molten plastic gathers at the cut edge under capillary action to form thick hard edge beads, destroying product flatness.
Pure cold processing: The oscillating knife operates at room temperature throughout, with absolutely zero heat-affected zone (HAZ). The cut end face perfectly retains the original physical mechanical elasticity and micro color of the base material, no yellowing, no hardening, no odor, zero volatilization, fully belonging to green and environmentally friendly processing technology.
How Does Tool-Free Cutting Quickly Switch Between Different Shapes and Sizes?
On traditional punch press production lines, every time a seal gasket or bag corner protector part is changed, professional fitters spend hours on die removal, installation, leveling and pressure adjustment; and a set of complex hardware laser dies costs hundreds or even thousands of dollars, with delivery times of 2–3 days or even longer.
Fully digital flexible production flow: CNC oscillating knife plastic cutting machines do not require any physical tooling. Engineers only need to complete product size modification in CAD software, export DXF/PLT vector files and import them into the machine CAM system.
Rapid response: Click nesting and the system immediately generates CNC cutting commands. Switching from cutting large-size dust curtains to cutting fine liner shaped parts takes only seconds. This “zero tooling cost, zero waiting period” production organization form makes even 1-piece flexible custom orders achieve extremely high margins.
CNC oscillating knife plastic cutting machines are especially suitable for: multi-size products, small-batch orders, sample production, custom products, product lines with frequent revisions.
How to Configure the Worktable When Choosing an Automatic Feeding CNC Oscillating Knife Plastic Cutting Machine?
The automatic feeding worktable is the core hardware hub of the entire equipment. It not only needs to withstand the inertial impact caused by high-speed acceleration and deceleration of the X-axis beam (acceleration often reaches 0.8G–1.2G), but also ensures that the conveyor belt maintains strict flatness during years of reciprocating cycles.
When purchasing a machine, selection should be based on the specifications of the commonly cut roll material, comprehensively considering the width redundancy of the effective table width of the machine table, torque margin of the feeding motor, organizational structure of the high-breathable conveyor belt, and pneumatic matching of the vacuum fan.
Select Effective Cutting Width According to Plastic Roll Width
Standard factory widths of industrial plastic rolls are usually 1.2m, 1.4m, 1.6m, 1.8m, 2.0m, etc.
Some suppliers will recommend a machine with an effective cutting width larger than the roll width when customers buy machines, calling this extra table width safety margin. In fact, our actual cutting tests find this practice is completely unnecessary — the effective cutting width of the machine can equal the material width.
For example, if your material width is 1.6 meters, you can choose a machine with size 1625 (1600×2500mm). The machine width we refer to is its effective cutting width, not the overall width of the machine. For a Trustercnc 1625 machine, its effective cutting width is 1600mm, while its overall width is 1984mm.
Determine Automatic Feeding Method According to Roll Length and Production Mode
If the customer uses continuous rolls, automatic feeding should match the actual production mode.
For example:
Short-batch products: may only require fixed-length feeding.
Long roll continuous production: more requires stable continuous feeding and roll unwinding systems.
For longer roll lengths, resistance at the unwinding end must also be considered. If unwinding is unstable, even if the feeding end is controlled very precisely, dimensional fluctuations may occur due to upstream material tension changes.
Therefore, a complete roll system should consider: unwinding → feeding → fixing → cutting → finished product collection.
How to Match Feeding Speed and Oscillating Knife Cutting Speed?
In CNC cutting systems, conveyor step feeding speed and tool cutting feed speed are two independent but cooperative systems.
Step transfer speed optimization: The idle travel speed of the conveyor belt during material indexing is usually set between 150 mm/s and 300 mm/s. Too fast will cause local lifting of thin rolls due to air resistance; too slow will increase idle auxiliary time.
Beat seamless connection: Trustercnc CAM software has “path end look-ahead and automatic feed pre-trigger” logic function. At the millisecond instant when the machine finishes cutting the last closed part in the working sheet and performs the tool lifting action, the system automatically sends position pulses to the conveyor servo driver, suppressing auxiliary feeding waiting time to within 3–8 seconds.
How Does the Vacuum Adsorption System Help Fix Soft Plastic Rolls?
One of the biggest risks of soft rolls during cutting is material movement. Vacuum adsorption creates negative pressure through the vacuum area on the worktable, making the material adhere to the table surface, thus reducing the possibility of material being carried by the blade during cutting.
Fan selection: It is recommended to configure a 7.5 kW to 11 kW two-stage high-negative pressure side-channel air ring fan (turbo fan), and the absolute static pressure at the suction inlet must be maintained at -25 kPa to -32 kPa.
Matrix micro-hole honeycomb adsorption plate: Dense small-pitch honeycomb ventilation chambers must be designed under the aluminum alloy vacuum table to ensure that when negative pressure passes through the circulating breathable felt, an extremely dense and uniform vertical downward attraction field is formed on the bottom of the plastic roll.
In Trustercnc CNC automated production units, the intelligent zoning system dynamically links pneumatic valves with the real-time Y-axis coordinate of the cutting head, automatically concentrating 80% of the negative pressure power in the specific area currently processed by the head, significantly improving the shear displacement stability of thin plastic films.
How to Select CNC Oscillating Tools for Different Plastic Rolls?
| Roll Thickness & Hardness | Recommended Tool | Recommended Blade Thickness & Tip Angle | Typical Applicable Plastic Rolls |
| Thin type (<0.8mm)Soft elastic (<85A) | (EOT) high-frequency electric oscillating knife(18,000 RPM, stroke 1mm) | 0.63 mm / 16°-30°Ultra-thin sharp micro-grain edge | TPU film, PE/PET film, PVC soft crystal film |
| Medium-thick (0.8-3.0mm)High toughness semi-hard (>90A) | (POT) high-frequency pneumatic knife(8,000 strokes/min, stroke 10mm) | 0.63-1.0mm / 30°Teflon anti-stick coated blade | PTFE Teflon rolls, high-density foamed PE rolls |
| Ultra-wear / composite reinforced(fabric skeleton plastic) | (PRT) electric active rotary knife(roll shear cutting without resistance) | Ten-angle / disc-shaped tungsten steel round bladecontinuous zero-stroke pulling | PVC laminated fabric rolls, fiberglass reinforced plastic rolls |
How to Select Blades for Thin Soft Plastic Rolls?
Thickness specification: When processing films with thickness between 0.1 mm and 0.8 mm, special blades with blade body thickness of 0.63 mm are selected. Too thick blades will exert excessive lateral splitting pressure on both sides of the incision when entering micro kerfs, causing film edge wrinkling.
Sharp angle grinding: Select sharp long bevel tip design with 16° to 30° angle. The extremely sharp tip can puncture the film instantly with extremely low vertical penetration resistance, so that the section is free of tensile elongation.
Micro grinding grade: The edge must be precision double-sided mirror polished by diamond grinding wheel, surface roughness must reach Ra 0.05 μm or better, completely eliminating micro-serrations and preventing snagging during high-speed film cutting.
How to Select Tools for Thicker or Tougher Plastic Rolls?
When processing 1.0 mm to 3.0 mm high-toughness wear-resistant plastic rolls (such as industrial-grade PTFE or semi-hard wear-resistant polyurethane board rolls), ordinary electric tool heads have limited micro-stroke (about 1mm) and power torque, and the tip is prone to insufficient cutting force at the bottom of thick materials.
Select high-frequency pneumatic oscillating knife (POT): It is recommended to switch to a POT pneumatic tool head driven by 0.7 MPa industrial oil-free compressed air. It has a mechanical deep stroke of up to 10.0mm. The large-stroke down stroke has abundant kinetic energy to instantly cut through high-strength polymer fibers, completely eliminating the problems of incomplete bottom cutting and tearing drawing of thick tough rolls.
Thickened high-rigidity blade: Blade body thickness must be upgraded to 1.0 mm, using large section moment of inertia to resist huge lateral rebound resistance deep in thick materials, maintaining 90° vertical incisions.
When Is It Necessary to Match Other Tools or Milling Cutters?
Matching round knife: When processing PVC laminated fabric, truck tarpaulin rolls with internal polyester fabric reinforced tear-resistant skeleton, oscillating blades are easily caught and blunted by transverse high-strength fabric fibers. Switching to a 6,000 RPM high-speed AC round knife, relying on continuous rotary shear force, can smoothly cut the skeleton fabric at speeds above 150 mm/s.
Matching high-speed spindle: If local processing of stepped counterbores with different depths, or damping sealing guide grooves milled on the surface of flexible sealing gaskets is required in the plastic roll, oscillating blades cannot achieve controlled depth stripping. A ultra-high-speed spindle (60,000 RPM) needs to be matched in the modular integrated tool head system, equipped with a single-edge micro spiral milling cutter for local micro-milling, realizing “one machine, multiple uses”.
How to Match Blade Length, Sharpness and Material Thickness?
Effective edge length matching formula:
Blade effective cutting edge length must satisfy: Blade Length ≥ Material Thickness + Tool Stroke + 5mm
For a 2.0 mm plastic roll matched with an 8 mm stroke pneumatic knife, the effective edge length must be ≥15mm to ensure the blade does not exit the material surface at top dead center of the stroke.
Balance between sharpness and toughness: Although tungsten carbide has extremely high hardness (HRA 92), it has high micro-brittleness. Never blindly pursue ultra-thin edges. When cutting engineering plastic rolls containing inorganic flame retardant fillers, extremely thin tips with angles below 20° are very prone to micro-chipping during continuous reciprocating impact. A 30° blade angle is the optimal industrial balance point between micro-shear resistance and impact fatigue life.
How to Avoid Skewing, Wrinkling and Stretching of Plastic Rolls During Automatic Feeding?
During automatic feeding, even a 0.5 mm angle deviation at the initial feeding section will amplify lateral cumulative displacement to several centimeters after 5 meters of continuous feeding, causing the typesetting pattern to completely deviate from the vacuum working area. More critically, once oblique shear tension is generated inside the roll, longitudinal dead folds will bulge on the plastic surface, and the entire batch will be scrapped directly when the blade passes.
Therefore, to achieve smooth and accurate continuous cutting, optimization control must be carried out from three aspects: unwinding tension source, feeding active centering and dynamic negative pressure control.
Why Do Soft Rolls Prone to Lateral Deviation During Feeding?
Raw material roll manufacturing error: When plastic films are blown, cast or slit into rolls, there are often tiny “thickness unevenness” (wedge cross-section) at both ends of the master roll. The thicker end has a slightly larger winding outer diameter, producing a tiny difference in linear speed at both ends during unwinding rotation, forcing the roll to naturally “run skew” in an arc toward the thinner side.
Drive roller parallelism mechanical tolerance: If the bearing positions at both ends of the main drive roller of the machine have a parallelism tolerance of more than 0.05 mm during assembly, the roller will apply asymmetric lateral shear force to the conveying felt during high-speed rotation, causing the felt itself to crawl laterally, directly driving the upper plastic roll off-center.

Why Does Excessive Feeding Tension Cause Changes in Cutting Dimensions?
Polymer molecular chains are in a curled high-elastic state at room temperature. During continuous roll conveying, the tension control strategy directly determines the strain accumulation of the material in the machine direction (MD).
Studies show that closed-loop tension adaptive control strategies can significantly suppress dynamic tensile strain of high-elastic substrates during transmission and acceleration/deceleration, eliminating material size rebound errors. Related continuous conveying tension control mechanics results can be found in IEEE journal paper “Web tension control of a roll-to-roll system based on adaptive control”.
When using a passive unwinding rack without an active servo motor, the machine conveyor must rely on its own friction grip to forcibly drag tens of kilograms of material roll to rotate. At this time, up to tens of Newtons of one-way tensile tension builds up inside the roll:
1. The material is forcibly stretched by 1%–3% along the long axis, and the machine precisely cuts 100 mm long strips on the stretched material.
2. When cutting is completed and the finished product is removed from the worktable, internal binding stress is released, and the molecular chains of the workpiece quickly shrink back to the original state. The final measured actual finished product length is shortened to 970–990 mm, forming irreversible batch scrap.
How to Improve Feeding Stability Through Correction, Pressing and Vacuum Adsorption?
Automatic photoelectric edge position control (EPC): Trustercnc CNC oscillating knife plastic cutting machines are equipped with infrared edge sensors to detect the physical edge position of the material in real time. Once deviation from the reference line by 0.2 mm is detected, the control board immediately sends pulses to the micro high-thrust servo motor, driving the entire unwinding spindle together with the roll to perform reverse micro-translation within 50 milliseconds, ensuring the material always remains straight when entering the machine felt. Accurate cutting position is maintained even for long-distance continuous feeding.
Leveling bidirectional pneumatic auxiliary press roller: The press roller can not only flatten the arched waves when the material wings unroll, but more importantly, it forms a line contact clamping zone with the active drive roller, providing symmetrical and uniform positive pressure for the material, completely offsetting micro-vibration caused by inner and outer layer peeling during unwinding.
Dual-state vacuum logic: At the instant the conveyor rotates forward to feed, the CNC PLC controls the main vacuum proportional valve to automatically reduce suction to 10%–15%, forming an “air-floating weak micro-suction” state. It has weak attraction to prevent the material from lifting, while eliminating damping drag caused by strong negative pressure, ensuring absolute precision of the feeding motor step displacement.
How to Set Cutting Parameters of CNC Oscillating Knife to Balance Speed and Edge Quality?
The matching ratio between blade translation speed and vertical reciprocating vibration determines whether the blade performs “precision micro-shearing” or “pulling tearing” of the material. Studies show that optimizing CNC interpolation strategies can significantly improve trajectory smoothness and accuracy, thereby improving cutting quality and reducing errors. Relevant research results can be found in Springer journal papers, such as “Fast and high precision control approach: polyline analysis and optimal NURBS interpolation for CNC machine tools” and “Accurate prediction of machining feedrate and cycle times considering interpolator dynamics”.
Do Vibration Frequency and Feed Speed Need Adjustment After Material Thickness Changes?
Vf×1000 = fs(60×F)
(In the formula: Vf= feed speed in mm/s; F = vertical reciprocating frequency of oscillating knife in Hz; fs = horizontal step per stroke in mm)
Parameter reconstruction when thickness increases: When plastic roll thickness increases from 0.5 mm to 2.0 mm, feed speed (Vf) must be actively reduced from 120 mm/s to 60–80 mm/s due to doubled material depth enveloping resistance.
Maintain micro-shear step: The oscillating knife must be maintained at the rated maximum vibration frequency (such as 15,000 RPM for EOT, about 250 Hz). This ensures that the horizontal displacement per stroke (fs) is stable within the optimal range of 0.25 mm to 0.45 mm.
If blindly speeding up to 180 mm/s, (fs) will exceed 0.7 mm, and the blade will directly push the material hard laterally before completing up-and-down cutting at depth, causing severe stepped ripples and tearing at the lower edge of the incision.
Why Do Straight Lines, Arcs and Complex Shaped Contours Require Different Motion Strategies?
Long straight sections (high feed limit): Tool attitude remains constant, C-axis yaw angle does not change. At this time, the machine can travel at maximum speed (e.g. 100–150 mm/s).
Arc sections (centripetal acceleration constraint): The smaller the cutting radius R, the greater the angular velocity ω of the rotating C-axis. The system must enable automatic look-ahead deceleration based on contour curvature, limiting normal acceleration according to the formula (V2 = An×R) to prevent the blade from “plowing” arc scratches on the outside of flexible plastic due to centrifugal force.
Complex shaped spline curves: Traditional CNC uses massive tiny straight line fitting splines, which causes frequent machine jitter. Trustercnc CAM system has advanced NURBS interpolation function, which smoothly filters poly-lines into high-order continuous curves, ensuring extremely smooth cutting contours.
How to Reduce Material Deformation for Small Holes, Sharp Corners and Narrow Contours?
When processing small holes (Φ≤20mm) and sharp bends (≤60°), soft plastic rolls are most prone to twisting and damage in place:
1. Corner overcut & lift-turn: It is strictly forbidden to rotate the C-axis in place without lifting the blade inside sharp corners — that will twist the inner plastic to pieces. Trustercnc CAM software must have the “lift-turn” function — blade cuts to corner vertex → vertical lift off material → C-axis rotates to new line tangent direction → blade re-inserts to continue cutting.
2. Small hole deceleration and overlap closure: Feed speed must be reduced by 50% when cutting small round holes, and 1.0–1.5 mm overlap closing trajectories are set at the start and end of the circumference, with ramped smooth tool retraction, completely eliminating tiny burrs at the joint.
How to Determine Parameters Suitable for Specific Plastic Rolls Through Trial Cutting?
It is recommended that before mass production of a new roll, operators should perform a standard trial cut template (including 1 80×80 mm square, 1 Φ30mm inner hole, 1 45° sharp corner and 1 set of R5 continuous S-curves) in the scrap area at the head of the board:
Step 1 (set frequency): Set vibration frequency to 95% of the tool head’s maximum rated value.
Step 2 (find speed): Start feed speed at 40 mm/s, increase upward in 15 mm/s steps, record the critical speed point (V_{limit}) where the incision begins to show slight fuzzing or drawing.
Step 3 (set safe operating line): Fix the actual mass cutting feed speed at 75%–80% of the safe critical value. This speed maximizes continuous output rate while reserving sufficient fault tolerance for batch-to-batch material unevenness.

How to Improve Cutting Accuracy and Production Stability When Continuously Cutting Plastic Rolls?
The biggest difference between continuous production and single-piece processing is that errors may accumulate.
A single CNC machine with accurate single positioning does not mean that the final product remains completely free of deviation after dozens of continuous feeds. Material expansion and contraction, feeding mechanism slippage, roll width changes, and adsorption state changes may all affect long-term stability. For example, the tolerance of parts cut in the first 5 meters is ±0.2mm, but by the 50th meter, dimensions may have drifted by several millimeters due to cumulative step errors.
Therefore, continuous roll processing should focus on both “machine coordinate accuracy” and “material motion accuracy”. Frame transmission rigidity, advanced intelligent CAM segmentation algorithms and digital haul closed-loop feedback systems are particularly important.
For factors affecting CNC oscillating knife cutter accuracy and improvement methods, please also read: CNC Knife Cutter Accuracy: Key Factors and How to Improve
How to Keep Automatic Feed Length Consistent with Actual Cutting Length?
The most basic method is to establish a clear feeding benchmark.
If each feed is a fixed length, then verification is needed: commanded feed length = actual material movement length.
It is recommended to verify using marks on the material, not just by viewing coordinates displayed by the control system.
If actual length deviation is found after continuous feeding, check:
1. Whether the feed roller is slipping.
2. Whether the material surface is too smooth.
3. Whether feeding pressure is appropriate.
4. Whether the material has undergone elastic elongation.
5. Whether encoder feedback is normal.
How to Reduce Cumulative Positioning Error in Continuous Processing?
Mark point positioning: For plastic rolls with continuous printing or equidistant punching, set a preset optical reference point (Mark point) to be read at the edge of the roll every feeding step (e.g. 1500 mm) in CAM software.
Absolute coordinate origin reset: Trustercnc CNC oscillating knife plastic cutting machines can install a small CCD camera next to the tool, automatically scan and capture Mark points and perform vector comparison with CAD theoretical coordinates. Once a 0.3 mm offset due to conveyor micro-slip is detected, the CNC system automatically resets the local coordinate system and reconstructs the current processing origin, forcing cumulative positioning error to zero after each feed step.
How Does CAD/CAM Software Ensure Accurate Cutting Paths for Complex Graphics?
Topology optimization and overlap line filtering: When parsing DXF vector drawings imported by users, Trustercnc CAM software can automatically identify and losslessly remove tiny cross-knot lines, duplicate lines and tiny polyline breaks caused by drawing errors within 0.01 mm in the background.
Intelligent climb/conventional milling planning and inner hole priority rule: Trustercnc CAM software automatically analyzes the parent-child hierarchical inclusion relationship of closed graphics, following the processing sequence of “inner holes first, then outer contours; small parts first, then large parts”. Ensures all internal precision holes are cut while the whole material is under the strongest full-plate high negative pressure constraint, and finally cuts the outer contour line, preventing displacement and shaking caused by the workpiece being cut empty in advance.
How Does Automatic Nesting Improve Roll Utilization and Reduce Invalid Cutting?
Continuous flow true shape nesting algorithm: Trustercnc self-developed nesting software supports interlocking nesting of shaped contours according to their physical real outline (such as two L-shaped parts interlocking, small washers nested inside large rings).
Improve material utilization: The algorithm supports 0°–360° free micro-angle rotation optimization, and can implement adaptive space compression along the roll width direction, compressing part spacing to 2.0–3.0 mm. In industrial mass nesting, digital nesting software can increase the comprehensive raw material utilization of plastic rolls from 70% of manual placement to 88%–94%, greatly reducing industrial waste generation.
What Machine Parameters Need to Be Confirmed Before Purchasing an Automatic Feeding CNC Oscillating Knife Plastic Cutting Machine?
Before deciding to purchase a CNC oscillating knife plastic cutting machine, provide the supplier with material type, thickness, roll width, single roll length, product size, minimum hole diameter, minimum fillet, cutting quantity and whether continuous feeding is required. This information can directly help the supplier judge machine specifications and tool configuration.
First Determine Width, Thickness and Type of Plastic Roll
This is the most basic and most important data.
Recommended to provide:
Material name
Minimum thickness
Maximum thickness
Maximum roll width
Single roll length
Whether the material has adhesive backing
Whether the material is elastic
Whether it is a multi-layer composite structure
For example: TPU, thickness 2 mm, roll width 1500 mm, single roll 30 m. This will help the supplier provide a more accurate machine configuration.
Determine Effective Cutting Area According to Product Size
For CNC oscillating knife plastic cutting machines with automatic feeding worktables, extra long worktables are unnecessary. For plastic rolls, the standard size model 1625 (1600 × 2500mm) fully meets cutting needs. Extra-long parts can be perfectly processed by automatic step-by-step forward movement through the conveyor belt. There is no need to blindly purchase overlong machines, avoiding unnecessary increase in overall energy consumption and workshop floor space cost.
Determine Tool and Tool Head Configuration According to Cutting Graphics
If products involve: small holes, narrow slots, sharp corners, small rounded corners, complex curves. Then you’d better choose a modular integrated tool head system with multiple tools:
1. One electric oscillating knife (EOT) or high-frequency pneumatic oscillating knife (POT) as the main cutting unit.
2. One creasing wheel for scenarios requiring folding and positioning creases on plastic surfaces.
3. One punching tool and high-speed electric spindle, for processing complex tiny mounting holes or counterbore processing.
Why Is It More Reliable to Provide Actual Plastic Roll Samples for Testing?
Because “plastic” is not a single material category.
Even for PVC, different formulas, hardness and thickness may produce different cutting results; even for TPU, elasticity may vary by material grade. The most reliable method before finalizing the machine is to mail actual material samples to the manufacturer, who can then perform:
Tool testing
Parameter testing
Feeding testing
Vacuum adsorption testing
Continuous cutting testing
Finished product dimension inspection
This is much more reliable than any judgment based solely on experience.
FAQs
Can we put two or even three rolls of material on one automatic feeding bracket and feed them automatically at the same time?
Absolutely. Trustercnc automatic feeding brackets are arranged in a trapezoidal double row, with four unwinding shafts per row, totaling 8. Multiple rolls can be placed at the same time and automatically fed and cut simultaneously by the automatic feeding system, achieving small multi-layer cutting.
For plastic cutting, how long does one oscillating knife blade last? How do I know when to replace it?
Blade life mainly depends on what plastic you cut:
Ordinary soft PVC, PE film: A good tungsten steel blade normally cuts continuously for 7 to 10 days.
Flame-retardant plastic or harder TPU: Wear is much faster, usually the edge dulls after 2 to 3 days.
The simplest on-site judgment methods:
1. Listen to the sound: When sharp, cutting produces a crisp, neat “buzzing” micro-vibration sound. Once the blade is dull, the sound becomes a dull “thumping” extrusion sound.
2. Check the bottom: Touch the bottom of the cut. If there are persistent fine burrs, drawing, or if the part has to be pulled off by hand, the tip is worn out.

When cutting transparent soft PVC (crystal sheet), the blade gets covered in greasy adhesive residue after a while, and the cut starts sticking. How to clean quickly on site?
Three methods can be referred to solve this:
1. Keep a bottle of industrial alcohol or WD-40 handy: Place a nozzle alcohol bottle next to the workshop. After every one or two rolls, stop the machine, spray some alcohol on a cloth, clamp and wipe down the blade. The residue wipes clean in seconds.
2. Switch to Teflon-coated blades: If you cut this material often, it is recommended to buy “black Teflon anti-stick coated blades”. Plastic oil residue simply won’t stick, reducing cleaning frequency greatly.
3. Slightly increase feed speed: Many operators think tool sticking is from cutting too fast, but the opposite is true. Too slow feed (e.g. below 30 mm/s) means the blade rubs and heats in place longer, easier to melt adhesive. Increasing speed to 60–80 mm/s often reduces sticking.
For tough plastic rolls within 25mm thickness, there is always a final layer at the bottom that won’t cut through, stays connected. How to fix?
Lower the Z-axis depth by 0.1 to 0.2 mm: It is recommended to directly add -0.1mm or -0.2mm to the value in the “cutting depth compensation” of the operation interface, so the tip penetrates a little further into the felt.
After changing to a new tungsten steel blade, it broke with a “crack” sound after only half an hour of cutting. Why do blades keep breaking?
Tungsten steel is hard but brittle. Continuous breakage may be due to two mistakes:
1. Cutting too deep, hitting the aluminum plate: This is the most common mistake for beginners. The tip only needs to cut through the plastic and penetrate 0.2 mm into the felt. If tool setting is off, the tip digs 2-3mm into the felt or even hits the aluminum bed below, the tip will chip when subjected to lateral thrust.
2. Small screw not tightened: The hex socket set screw holding the blade in the tool holder is loose or not locked. The blade slips down during cutting and suddenly breaks under force.
After cutting one thin plastic, the next order changes to a thick roll. How to re-set the knife fastest and effortlessly?
With automatic tool setter: Trustercnc automatic tool setter can be optionally equipped, using infrared sensor system to automatically detect and calibrate tool position, so the machine can independently calculate cutting depth. Reduces manual intervention and eliminates depth errors caused by manual adjustment.
